Who benefits from the genres of music created by black artists?

Much of the current contemporary music and pop culture in the United States can be traced back to black and Native musicians.

However, their contributions have long gone unrecognized and their songs have often been commercialized for a mostly white audience.

So how do musicians today work to undo that historical erasure? And how do they continue to celebrate Black performance and artistry?

On FirstMarc Lamont Hill sits down with Jake Blount, an award-winning musician and scholar who specializes in the early folk music of black Americans, and Mark Anthony Neal, a distinguished professor of African and African American studies at Duke University and author of several books, including: What the Music Said: Black Popular Music and Black Public Culture, to discuss the contributions and removal of Black and Indigenous musicians.
