Pugh told director Zach Braff, “I think I should cut my hair off at the beginning of the movie.” Although Braff was against this because it wouldn’t work, the actress asked him to figure it out for himself. The Don’t Worry Darling star also said the entire crew was worried about how to navigate the shoot when Pugh decides to cut her own hair at the beginning of the film. The team even had a conversation among themselves and told Braff, “This is insane. She can’t do this. This doesn’t help at all.”

The crew found a way for Pugh’s to cut her own hair and she found it extremely liberating. Florence Pugh said, “If anything, it was the final key to unlocking this character.” It took the vanity out the window.”

Pugh also says she had a personal connection to the scene where her character impulsively cuts her own hair in the movie, because she really had similar impulses as a teenager.
