Episode 8 of The power was full of big moments – from Allie (Halle Bush) influencing someone’s mind for the first time to Rob (John Leguizamo) telling Margot (Toni Collette) he wants a divorce. But the most climactic event was undoubtedly the one that unfolded in the final moments of the episode. Tatyana (Zrinka Cvitesic), who has been trapped her entire life in her marriage to Carpathia president Viktor Moskalev (Alexandru Bindeau), reaches her breaking point.
Tatiana has long disliked her husband, whom she was pressured to marry at a young age. Viktor does not treat Tatiana like a human being and has never appreciated her voice. In this episode, kicking her dog was the last straw. Tatiana decides to kill the president, but not with her new ability that allows women to generate electricity with their fingers. Instead, she takes a gymnastics trophy from her once-illustrious career as a gymnast and beats it to death.

“I think killing him with electricity would be too human for him,” Cvitesic told Fandom. “He was one of two people who stole her youth, and she lived her life with him unable to speak, feel, think. The other person who, according to Tatiana, had deprived her of a future is her mother, who forced her adolescent daughter into the union. “She lived in a cage – she never left the palace,” Cvitesic continued. “I think it’s a nice metaphor because he stopped her Olympic gymnast life, so [by] kill him with the trophy she won.
Executive producer Naomi de Pear further discussed Tatiana’s specific weapon. “She’s definitely killing him because she has the power,” the Pear said. In Amazon Prime Videos The power — adapting Naomi Alderman’s novel of the same name — teenage girls around the world, and later adult women, are learning to use this new electrical skill. “But the fact that she uses [the trophy] and she uses her bare hands, I think it’s so cathartic for me as a viewer because I hate him so much — but it also holds such a promise of what she’s capable of later on,” de Pear said.
The murder is a pivotal moment for Tatiana. “She never dreamed of being in control of her own life again,” said Cvitesic. “So once the opportunity arises, she just grabs it, because she is a born survivor.”
Of course, there are big implications for where Tatiana lies on the moral spectrum after this step. “I think one of the joys of the series is that you find yourself supporting a character doing something that you would do in a normal story, that’s appalling, it’s an act of violence,” said executive producer Jane Featherstone. “But in our story, through the reversal of thinking, [you’d go], maybe that’s a good thing because he tortured her.” It is intended for the audience to have mixed feelings about Tatiana and other characters. “The whole thing is then you sit back and go, I shouldn’t feel that way, and that’s the whole crux of our story,” Featherstone said.
‘MADE PEOPLE Hurt PEOPLE’
After Tatiana kills Viktor, she kills her assistant Solongo (Bayra Bela) and blames the innocent girl for Viktor’s death. Alderman, author of The power, talked about the character’s motivations. “As they say on the internet, hurt people, hurt people,” she said. “Tatiana, as she shows on the show, hasn’t had a great time in her life – she seems to have it all and as she says, ‘Do you think all this cost me nothing?'”
Alderman also shared how the character’s past has shaped her. “After all, Tatiana turns out to be someone who could have lived with Viktor for the past 20 years,” said the author. “Maybe that also says something about her.”
Showrunner and executive producer Raelle Tucker said she doesn’t believe in villains and heroes. “I think everyone exists somewhere on the spectrum,” Tucker said. “And one of the exciting things about telling Tatiana’s story throughout the season is you get to see how she became what she is.” She is a character whose early years are shown. “I think it’s a very human, grounded story that unfortunately a lot of women can relate to,” Tucker said. “And that feeling of coming out of nowhere and striving so hard for a dream and seeing that dream snatched away — and being seen as kind of like a piece of meat to someone.”
It’s a devastating story no matter how you look at it. “What she’s doing to Solango, what she’s going to do in future seasons if we can make more of it — some things are just unforgivable,” Tucker continued. “So it’s not about us defending the behaviour. It’s about understanding how someone can get to a point where they take such actions.”
