Germán is eligible to return from his suspension on Sunday and Luis Severino gets the ball on Saturday, so Vásquez completes the rotation for the Yankees’ home series against the Padres.
Vásquez, 24, was an international signing from the Dominican Republic and made his professional debut in the Yankees’ organization in 2018. He has since worked his way up the chain, making nine starts this season for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. , pitching to a 4.85 ERA and 1.57 WHIP.
A “three-true-outcome” outing may be on the agenda for Vásquez Friday. In his 42 2/3 Triple-A innings this season, he struckout 50, walked 23 and gave up five home runs. The Padres can also be tough on walks, strikeouts, and home runs.
As noted, this looks like a starting spot for Vásquez. Once the Yankees can include Germán back in the rotation, he will join Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Clarke Schmidt and Severino to tentatively round out the five. Carlos Rodón and Frankie Montas remain on the injured list.
